Surface Land Professional (Landman) | Marathon Oil Company | Dickinson, ND

Marathon Oil Corporation seeks a Land Professional for the Bakken land team, located in Dickinson, North Dakota. the successful candidate will have preferrably at minimum two years Land experience, in Surface Land matters, in dealing with: surface owners, lessors, government officials and industry counterparts. Candidates without any experience, will be considered for this position, only if they have a Petroleum Land Management, Energy Commerce, or Energy Management degree. This position will report directly to the Bakken Land Supervisor, in Dickinson and involve close teamwork with Land Professionals, Engineers, Geoscientists, and Land Analyst.

  • Pro-actively seek business opportunities that are in areas of interest to Marathon. Build rapport with surface owners, lessors, government officials and industry counterparts to enhance our commitment to be the Partner of Choice. Negotiate, prepare, review and handle a variety of Land contracts and transactions, including oil and gas leases, surface agreements, assignments, joint operating agreements, farm-in/farm-out agreements, miscellaneous letter agreements, gas storage agreements, federal unit agreements, AMI's, etc
  • Managing complex ongoing commitments and requirements contained in surface use agreements and ensuring Marathon's compliance with those agreements. This is an environmentally sensitive area and working with the federal and state government agencies will be a critical component of this position. The ability to work with joint operating agreements, surface use agreements, right of way agreements and numerous miscellaneous contracts will be an everyday responsibility
  • Coordinate Land broker activities associated with fee title, state and/or federal record checking for preparation of ownership and title information. Handle lease acquisition of private, state, native and federal lands, as applicable. Attend state lease sales.
  • Moderate travel required. Trips to various fields and surface locations will be required and occasional out of town travel is necessary.
  • Maintain Land maps and knowledge of MOC acreage inventory and Land positions in key areas, as well as monitoring competitor's Land positions. Provide information for new development opportunities and offer ideas for Land strategies and terms. Prepare and monitor well checklist and Land summaries for all MOC and outside operated wells in your assigned area.
  • Make presentations to Marathon management, departments and teams, as well as potential partners, groups, etc. Assist and participate with engineers, geologists and drilling teammates in the planning and preparation of the business unit drilling program
  • Act as the point of contact for some stakeholder and public responsibility issues. This can involve public contact through notice letters, phone calls, regulatory process or conducting occasional public meetings.

  • Degree: Bachelors Required
  • Major Discipline: PLM, Energy Management or Energy Commerce required without any experience
  • Years Experience Required: Entry level with two years preferred
  • Travel Required: Moderate amount of travel
